What’s New In Ultimate Footer Ad Version 2

by Graham Cox on June 11, 2009

Since I launched Ultimate Footer Ad back in March, the response has been amazing.  At the time of writing UFA has sold almost 600 copies and generated $24585.35 in gross sales so a massive thanks to everyone who bought. Considering it’s my first proper product launch I think that’s a great result already and sales are still going strong.

What’s more, that’s without hardly any promotional activity either in the last couple of months. I’ve been so busy working to launch a new ecommerce site selling Outdoor baby & toddler clothing that I’ve simply not had the time. It’s the same reason I havn’t posted here for a while.

Anyway, what’s been even more satisfying is seeing the excellent results users are getting with UFA, particularly on blogs and ecommerce sites. Ultimate Footer Ad is never going to compete with a hover opt-in ad or squeezepage, but then it’s not meant to. Where the script excels is in capturing visitor attention on content sites where you don’t want to annoy the visitor by blocking their view with some annoying popup or hover ad.

Well for the past few weeks we’ve been busy putting the touches to UFA v2. It’s a free upgrade for all existing customers and I’ll be releasing it next Wednesday 17th June. Here’s the main features

  1. The ability to set your own text as the ‘Thanks for subscribing message’ when someone opts in to an optin footer ad.
  2. Extended character limits for the ad Headline and Call to Action. Both have been increased by 10 characters in response to customer feedback.
  3. A new setting to allow the footer ad to disappear after X secs. You can specify the ad to disappear after 20 seconds or at various intervals up to 5 minutes after it first appears. Plus you have the option to display a little countdown timer next to the Close X if you want to create urgency by showing your visitors when the ad is closing.
  4. You can now drop cookies on a visitor when they click or opt-in to a footer ad so UFA knows not to show that particular ad to them again. This is pretty powerful stuff, particularly if you are using the Ad rotating functionality.
  5. These next two features are commonly used in conjunction with one another, though they don’t have to be. Firstly, PHP code snippets can now be used in certain parts of the ad on both standard and optin ads. This allows you (in conjunction with #6 below) to pass a variable such as an affiliate id or link tracking id for example to the end of your destination url on standard ad’s or to a custom hidden field in your optin ads.
  6. The ability for custom URL Variables to be passed to UFA and embedded in your footer ad. Embed a URL variable into your Ad Insertion Code to store an affiliate id, name, tracking id etc from the url your footer ad displays on.

For example, an affiliate with affiliate url of http://www.yourproduct.com?aff_id=1234 sends a visitor to your salespage which uses an optin footer ad to collect leads. Simply insert aff_id as the custom URL variable into your optin Ad Insertion code and use a php code snippet (see #5 above) in your autoresponder’s html form code to pass that variable’s value to your autoresponder. Now you can embed your affiliate’s id in your autoresponder messages, thereby boosting their chances of making the sale and your chances of attracting affiliates. Pretty cool huh?

  7. General bug and compatibility fixes including a workaround for using Ultimate Footer Ad alongside other scripts and plugins that use jquery such as the Featured Content Gallery Plugin for Wordpress
  8. Due to customer demand, version 2 also allows multiple UFA installs to share the same database by using different MySQL table prefixes for each install.

That’s pretty much it. Oh by the way we’ve also done some further testing and confirmed that UFA is also compatible with Infusionsoft, Feedburner and Mailchimp autoresponders aswell as Aweber, Email Aces and Get Response.

Anyway, if some of the above features seems quite techie, don’t worry, none of them are mandatory and Ultimate Footer Ad still remains incredibly easy to use. Tooltips are inside the script to provide help on all the new functionality and tutorial videos will also be made available.

The UFA plugin is awesome, but I have one feature request for the next round. When I set it to appear every, say, 5 pageviews then I’d like to have the option for it to appear on pageview #’s 1, 6, 11, etc. rather than on #’s 5, 10, 15. I want them to see it on the first stop, but to do that it’d have to be every 1 pageview and that could get annoying.

I love the “disappear” feature now though. Can’t wait for its release.

When are you going to release version 2 to people that already have Ultimate Footer Ad ?

4 Derrick 06.12.09 at 12:19 am

Hey

Proud to say that i am one of your 600 copies sold and honestly speaking, Ultimate Footer Ad is one of the few product that i have purchased and that is user friendly as well as valued for money.

Glad to know that existing customers gets all the free upgrades/updates and looking forward that.

Lastly, with tooltips and tutorial videos, i dont see many should have problems with those new features or new functionality.

Well done and thanks for the free upgrades.

Awesome Graham! When is it due out? Or did I miss that somewhere? I am thrilled with the increase in sales I’ve received since installing UFA!

I have UFA and one thing I would really love to see is a better way of executing the footer ad. Right now you have it to where it can be executed by javascript or a Wordpress widget, correct?

Well, my Wordpress sites are so customized that I can’t use widgets, so I have to use the plugin Javascript Logic to execute javascript because I need a different footer ad on different Wordpress pages and no footer ad at all on other pages.

Am I missing something here or is the way I’m doing it the only way this can currently be done? (by the way, because of how the Javascript Logic plugin works, I can only inject 1 javascript per page, so it limits me to choosing between UFA and something else I could use)

Thank you,
Greg

I bought UFA on 5/22. Will I be able to get a free upgrade to UFA 2?

8 Graham Cox 06.12.09 at 12:38 am

Hi guys

Release date is next Wednesday the 17th June. Sorry, that bit got buried a bit in the post. I’ll be emailing all existing customers who are registered for updates with the download link.

Thanks for all the feedback too, it’s really useful.

Well it’s gone 1.30am here now in the UK so I’ll answer all your other points tomorrow.

Cheers…Graham

Hi Graham,

I remember I was using the footer ad on my thesis themed blog (like this one) and for some reason it would NOT close when you clicked the little “x” in the corner for people.

I got a couple comments from people on how annoying it was that they couldn’t close it, so I took it down … has this issue been fixed as well?

Thanks!
CAleb

10 Graham Cox 06.12.09 at 6:27 am

@Matt. Actually you can already do that. In the General Settings page, just set the Global Ad settings ‘Return visitor sees ad’ to every 5th revisit. So the visitor will see the ad the first visit, then the 6th, 11th and so on. Does that make sense?

Really glad you like it btw

@Michelle, @pedagangIT. UFA v2 is released 17th June, next Wednesday. As long as you have registered for updates you’ll receive an email then with download instructions.

@Greg. You’d have to do this programmatically to tell wordpress to display ad A on home page, ad B on permalink page id 27 etc. Someone on the wordpress forums will probably be able to assist you with that. Does that help?

@Caleb. That was never a bug as such, just a problem with your particular install I expect. Certainly I’ve not seen this issue with other customers. A reinstall may well fix it.

Hope that clarifies. Cheers, Graham

Hi,

How do I install this as a wordpress widget or plugin..

Your guide does not say anything about this…

Also, my wordpress install already has a database installed for it naturally so do I require to add another database for UFA..?

Please let me know.

Thanks.

Looking forward receiving the upgrade :)
Thanks Graham!

Hi Graham

This is some great news especially the compatibility fixes like the jquery one :)

I am looking forward to getting this new version installed so we can finally get to use it on our blogs

I really like your welliesandworms.co.uk site - it looks very pro and neat :)

@Graham Cox , don`t miss my email bro pedagang.it@gmail.com i waitting that 17th june..

i want to upgred that..

16 Graham Cox 06.12.09 at 1:44 pm

Thanks for all the nice comments guys…it’s really appreciated. Wellies And Worms has been a real labour of love. We were lucky to find a great web designer called Geoff Ellis here in Bristol.

@Ron S Check out the docs page for a video showing how to put the UFA javascript into a wordpress blog. Regarding the database, in version 2 you’ll be able to use any existing database (incl. a wordpress database) to install UFA on.

@pedangangIT - You just need to Register for Updates from within the script to receive v2 download instructions.

Cheers…Graham

You are specifying the wrong url to login. I’ve just sent you the correct one in a private email.

You just need to Register for Updates from within the script again to get back on the update notification list.

This footer ad is the best that I’ve seen, period! The features that you list are going to be well received and I know that the opt-in rates are going to start going through the roof.

I can’t wait till June 17th to get my hands on the upgrade.

What headlines has everyone seen that has produced the best Opt-In rates? I’m just curious as to split test results.

All the best!

Chris

20 Stefano 06.20.09 at 6:46 pm

Hello, to ultimate footer as is a great script but in Italy I am having problems with some that do not support hosting ioncube and then I can not install it! How can I do?

Is there a solution to my problem?

Thanks Stefano

21 Graham Cox 06.20.09 at 7:20 pm

Hi Stefano,

The only solution is to find a decent host that supports ioncube…any good host should.

Cheers…Graham

22 Stefano 06.20.09 at 7:24 pm

The problem is that I can transfer my site on another hosting for par ultimate footer to work!

23 Graham Cox 06.22.09 at 8:34 pm

Hi Stefano

It’s a pain I know but any host that doesn’t support ioncube probably isn’t worth staying with anyway.

24 Matt 07.11.09 at 7:49 pm

I just discovered that UFAv2 does not appear to work in IE v8 (I had only been testing in Firefox). When clicking on the link in the footer ad using IE the new window displays this message: “Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage” and is stuck at this url, “http://bigbrothernetwork.com/misc/UFA/link.php?id=101&admin=1″

What is going on here??

25 Matt 07.11.09 at 8:02 pm

Follow-up to previous comment. Version 1 works with IEv8, but not Version 2. I’ve had to rollback to the old version. Glad I kept the old database.

Graham, how long before you can fix v2?

26 Graham Cox 07.13.09 at 12:46 pm

Hi Matt,

I just tested your bigbrothernetwork
footer ad in IE8 here and it works fine. I don’t believe there’s any problem with it. I imagine there must have been a problem with your install. Did you reinstall to get it working?

Cheers… Graham

27 Matt 07.13.09 at 1:16 pm

Graham, Yes it works now because you tested it on Version 1 of your software which I mentioned above that I had to rollback to.

Version 1 (which is running now) works in IE v8. Version 2 (which I took down since it does not work) does not work in IE v8.

It’s not a reinstall issue since v2 works in Firefox/Chrome, but not in IE.

28 John 07.24.09 at 5:19 am

I was just introduced to UFA and would like to see it work, but opened your pages in FireFox and IE8 and it did not activate in either. Just tested Google’s Chrome… nope…. and now nothing from Apple’s Safari. Phooey. I want to see this work, it seems like a fantastic tool (or would be).

29 Graham Cox 07.26.09 at 7:24 pm

@Matt, this bug is fixed in v2.1 which will be released tomorrow all being well.

@John, were you looking on UltimateFooterAd.com or this site? The ads aren’t running on this site at the mo for the simple reason I’ve not had time to set them up again as my main ecommerce site is taking all my time right now.

30 Matt 07.26.09 at 7:51 pm

Great! Thanks, Graham.

31 Tim 08.31.09 at 11:04 pm

The Aweber integration is good, I took the HTML snippet - just the form - and pasted in and it parsed perfectly.

Great stuff, once I have my template I will see how it goes.

32 Dexter 10.14.09 at 6:33 pm

Ok, I am completely lost. I have looked high and low for information on how to get the UFA to work with my WordPress blog. I have installed everything correctly and all is working except the Ad. I know that I need to find a plugin that will allow it to work with WordPress but I cant find any documentation that explains what plugin is needed and how to get it working. Will someone be so kind as to point me in the right direction?

@Ron S Check out the docs page for a video showing how to put the UFA javascript into a wordpress blog.

I do cannot for the life of me find the docs page or video showing how to get this done.

33 Graham Cox 10.15.09 at 11:55 am

Hi Dexter

No plugin is required. It’s just a case of inserting the Ad Insertion Code before the closing tag on your blog.

Here’s the Docs and video tutorials

See the last video for putting the Ad Insertion Code into your wordpress blog.

Hope that helps

34 Sean 10.17.09 at 6:32 am

Graham, am I correct in stating that there is no need to use your directions in items 5 and 6 of this post when using InfusionSoft and the Affiliate Module?

To my understanding, if someone click’s on your affiliate’s affiliate link, then it drops a cookie, which would be picked up by the default Infusion opt-in code, no matter if that code is on a regular page, or in the Ultimate Footer Ad, correct?

35 Sean 10.17.09 at 8:47 pm

Graham, does the footer ad show up ONLY in the folder we installed it in?

In other words, if I installed it the main folder on public_html, will it show up only on the main page, or will it also show up on ANY sub-page of that?

I am on WordPress.

Thanks,
Sean G.

36 Graham Cox 10.17.09 at 9:02 pm

Hi Sean,

Any subpage of that. Aslong as you install the script on that domain, the ad will appear on any page of that domain you include the ad insertion code into. You can ofcourse then set on the general settings page, the frequency the ad displays, eg reappear every 5th, 10th pageview, revisit etc.

Hope that clarifies,

Graham

37 Sean 10.17.09 at 9:15 pm

Graham, is there a way to make the footer ad to appear on our main WordPress pages, but not on some other, seperate HTML sales pages we have?

In other words, I don’t want the footer ad to show on our sales pages, which are at http://www.OurSite.com/c1/p1.

p.s. I think all of the other settings are awesome - wow, even split testing!

Sean G.

38 Graham Cox 10.24.09 at 9:36 pm

Hi Sean,

If you have html sales pages on the same domain as your blog, then it should be a case of just pasting the Ad Insertion Code into footer.php in your blog template. UFA should then display on your blog but not your static html pages.

Re your inquiry about Infusionsoft, I’m afraid I’m not familiar enough with Infusionsoft to provide you an answer. Can you provide more info please.

Glad you like it btw…that means a lot, thanks.

Graham

congratz on your success, it’s always great to see someone become successful :)

40 James Watson 01.11.10 at 2:07 am

Hi Graham,

Hope you’re well, long time no catch-up, let’s do that soon :)

I can confirm that Sean is correct, Infusion’s affiliate software will cookie a referred visitor, and you can set the length of that time to be up to 12 months, I believe.

Cheers
James
